Since 1953, WECSZ has shaped conservation in Zambia through landmark rescues, national parks and national environmental policy.
Historical milestones
“Operation Noah” — the rescue of animals stranded by the flooding of the Zambezi Gorge behind the Kariba Dam.
Helped establish Lochinvar and Blue Lagoon National Parks.
Undertook aerial wildlife censuses and biodiversity mapping of lechwe, sitatunga and large mammals across the Kafue Flats, Bangweulu Basin and Luangwa Valley.
Helped mitigate mining pollution in Kabwe (lead) and on the Copperbelt (heavy-metal leachates).
Protected forest reserves — including a Supreme Court appeal against developments in the Lusaka East Forest Reserve — and challenged illegal logging and deforestation.
